HOMEWOOD, Ala. - The UWG softball team dropped a 10-2 decision in midweek action on Tuesday, falling to the Samford Bulldogs on the road.
West Georgia (4-5) led in the middle of the fifth before things went south, allowing Samford (9-5) to add nine in the fifth. The Wolves had just three hits and committed two errors.
Samford struck first, pushing across a single run against UWG starter Jenna Samuel on two hits sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt.
The Wolves responded with a solo shot from Sky Ramos in the second inning as the junior drilled one over the left field wall to draw even.
Samuel helped herself in the fourth, doubling home Ally Long who drew a two-out walk and giving herself and the Wolves a 2-1 lead. She then blanked Samford in bottom of the fourth, getting out of a second straight bases loaded jam.
The Bulldogs finally got to Samuel again in the fifth inning, leading off with a single and a two-run home run to take the lead. Things unraveled from that point as the Bulldogs went on to score nine in the inning on five hits, three free passes, and two errors to complete the run-rule victory.
Walks were the Wolves' Achilles heel on Tuesday, as they issued eight base on balls in 4.2 IP. Samuel was charged with the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season.
