YOUNGSVILLE, La. - The UWG softball team started the Mardi Gras Mambo with a pair of win on Friday, defeating Southern 6-5 before taking down Grambling in a 7-1 decision in game two.
Int he opener, West Georgia (6-5) had 13 hits and used a five-run fourth to pull away before holding off Southern's late charge in the seventh.
The Jaguars went up 2-0 before the Wolves got two-out singles from Olivia Slocumb and Zekylah Boyd in the fourth, and Megan Waites drove them in with a three run homer. After a walk by Blaire Bizette, Makayla Register slugged the second of the inning, and UWG led 5-2.
West Georgia added one in the fifth on a Shelby Garrett double and they would need it as Southern cut the deficit to one on a three-run homer in the seventh before the Wolves slammed the door.
Jenna Samuel picked up the win, tossing four innings of relief behind Makayla Register.
In the second game of the day, UWG pounded out 15 hits and cruised to a victory over Grambling State.
The Wolves got runs in the second and third before Grambling got on the board and then UWG scored five unanswered including a three-run fifth.
Waites and Garrett each had three hits in game two while Emerson Miller picked up two in the win.
Dixiana Sims pitched in relief, picking up the win and striking out nine batters in 5.0 innings of work.
West Georgia returns to action for two more games tomorrow, taking on Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin.
