FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UWG softball team dropped games one and two of a three-game ASUN Conference series on Friday, falling in a doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-7, to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on the road.
West Georgia (9-21, 1-7 ASUN) was one-hit by FGCU (19-20, 6-2 ASUN) in a run-rule game one before falling by a two-run margin in a back-and-forth affair in game two. The Wolves have now dropped eight consecutive games.
Game One
In the series opener, UWG had just one hit while the Eagles had seven hits and took advantage of three errors by the Wolves' defense. FGCU scored three in the first, two in the second, and two more in the third to lead 7-0.
FGCU tallied their eighth run in the bottom of the sixth to run-rule UWG.
The lone hit from UWG came off the bat of Addison Sturdivant.
Kaprice Leonard started for UWG pitching just one inning before being replaced. She was charged with the loss while Allison Sparkman tossed the complete game one-hitter for the Eagles.
Game Two
There were four lead changes in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader, and the UWG offense came out swinging. Megan Waites began the game with a walk, later scoring on a Blaire Bizette double. Addison Sturdivant then singled home Bizette and Jacelyn Lahr singled home Shelby Garrett who singled earlier in the frame and Emerson Miller who reached via the walk. Zekylah Boyd then doubled home Sturdivant and UWG led 5-0 before FGCU touched a bat.
Two hits and an error yielded a pair of runs for FGCU in the first inning and a frame later, the Eagles regained a 6-5 lead by putting up a four spot on four hits and another error.
In the fourth, Addison Sturdivant picked up a second RBI, again singling home Bizette and Jenna Samuel, who started the game in the circle for UWG, drove in another to put the Wolves back ahead, 7-6.
Four hits in the Eagles' half of the fourth and a third UWG error plated two runs and chased Samuel from the game, and gave the Eagles the lead for good at 9-7. FGCU then turned it over to their ace, Allison Sparkman, who pitched the one-hitter in the series opener, and she gave up just two hits over the final three frames, both coming in the seventh, but the game ended on a double play.
UWG had 10 hits in game two with Sturdivant and Lahr each recording a two-hit game. Both, along with Samuel, also recorded a pair of RBIs.
