UWG Falls to FAMU in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - UWG baseball dropped today's road contest 7-4 to FAMU, pushing the Rattlers' series lead to 2-1 with one game remaining. First pitch for the series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Capitalizing on a pair of West Georgia (8-6) errors, FAMU (6-10) was able to overcome Carter Dierdorf's back-to-back home runs, ultimately leading to a Rattlers victory.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "We made too many mistakes defensively. We only gave up two earned runs. Those mistakes were the difference in the game. We have to learn from it. We need to be able to handle the baseball better. We need to play at a higher level of baseball. That being said, the guys are competing and tomorrow is a new day."

West Georgia started right-handed pitcher Seth Dudley on the mound. In 15 frames across three starts coming into today, Dudley posted a 6.00 ERA with a UWG second-best 17 strikeouts. Making his debut on the mound for the Rattlers was right-handed sophomore Zach Sigman.

Following yesterday's one-hit performance, it did not take long for the Wolves to get on the board. In the first, Noah Darden put UWG up 1-0 on a fielder's choice that drove a base runner home.

West Georgia held this tight 1-0 lead until a wild pitch in the dirt allowed a Rattler to score during the third inning.

With the game still locked up at 1-1, a UWG error and passed ball on back-to-back plays pushed the FAMU advantage to 3-1 in the fifth.

During the sixth, FAMU rattled off four more quick scores to push their advantage to 7-1 with three frames remaining. This inning marked the ending of Dudley's day on the mound. Through 5.2 frames, Dudley let up two earned runs while striking out five batters. He was relieved by right-handed graduate student Dosie Drakeford.

Despite being down big, the Wolves continued to battle with the Rattlers. During the seventh, UWG dashed the hosts' lead to 7-3 on a two-run homer by none other than the ASUN home run leader, Carter Dierdorf.

Going into eighth, Drakeford's day came to an end as he would be replaced by redshirt sophomore Davis Williams. In one frame, Drakeford surrendered one hit and tallied a strikeout.

During the ninth, Dierdorf crushed a second straight home run, cutting the FAMU lead to 7-4.

Sadly for the Wolves, FAMU held on to win 7-4.

BY THE NUMBERS
In his one inning on the mound, Williams let up just one hit and struck out one batter.

For the second time this season, Carter Dierdorf cracked two home runs today. This puts this Georgia native in first place in the ASUN for homers with eight.

Through the three FAMU games, Brady McDevitt has tallied a UWG-high four hits with two coming today.

As a unit, FAMU has taken the hitting edge at 23-17, after the Wolves led the plate battle 10-9 today.
