DECATUR, Ga. - The UWG softball team wrapped up their final non-conference weekend on Sunday at the Bob Heck Memorial, dropping an 8-5 decision to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.
West Georgia (8-12) went up early in the contest before North Dakota (11-11) came back to win the contest on Georgia State's campus.
The Wolves got the scoring started early as Blaire Bizette singled home Megan Waites in the first inning to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. In the second, a dropped fly ball and a throwing error plated two runs for UWG, extending the advantage to 3-0.
North Dakota then scored six unanswered runs, using a home run in the second to chip away before getting three in the third and two in the fourth.Â
In the fifth, UWG got two more runs, using a Dixiana Sims home run and an RBI single by Waites to cut into the lead, but the Wolves would not be able to scrape across any more runs, falling in the weekend finale.
UWG used three pitchers in the contest with Calli Hardison starting and being charged with the loss after running into trouble in the third. Jenna Samuel was impressive in relief, tossing 1.2 innings of no-hit work out of the bullpen.
The top four in the order: Waites, Addison Sturdivant, Bizette, and Shelby Garrett combined for seven of the nine hits while Sims provided the other two from the seven hole. Waites led the way with a 3-for-5 performance.
