Explosive Sixth Frame Pushes Wolves to Friday Night Victory

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball opened their ASUN home series against Jacksonville by taking a 6-4 game one win tonight at Cole Field.

A four-run sixth inning powered by a Tyler Presnell two-run homer, and fantastic pitching by Lane Pearson and Brendan Parks pushed the Wolves (16-15, 7-6 ASUN) to a Friday night win over the Dolphins (17-16, 7-6 ASUN) in front of a packed home crowd.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said,  "Big innings like the sixth are huge, especially against a good team like Jacksonville. Our guys battled. Their starter (Richard Long) pitched very well and kept us off balance. We were able to capitalize on some things tonight and we out-battled them. I also thought Lane Pearson and Brendan Parks did an outstanding job tonight. They battled. We had some adversity late, but Parks battled through it. Both of them have been consistent throughout the season. They are commanding their pitches in the zone."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his ninth start of the season for UWG was ASUN strikeout and ERA leader Lane Pearson. Through 49.1 frames, Pearson posted a league-best 1.82 ERA and 58 strikeouts, while holding batters to a fourth-lowest .204 average coming into today. For the Dolphins, senior righty Richard Long made his ninth appearance as well. In 49 frames across eight games, the 2024 Second Team All-ASUN pitcher has held batters to a 1.92 average (second in the ASUN), while posting a 2.39 ERA (third in the ASUN) with 41 strikeouts (seventh in the ASUN) prior to today.

The Wolves were the first team to score in game one. During the second frame, UWG went up 1-0 after Tyler Presnell's hit snuck between the second baseman's legs, allowing Landon Weidner to take home from second.

The visitors tied the game at one apiece with an RBI base hit to left field in the top of the fourth.

Everything stayed knotted at 1-1 until a deep base hit into center drove a Dolphin home in the sixth. Still in this frame, the Wolves quickly recovered, thanks to an RBI single down the right field line by Carter Dierdorf. Following this, Landon Weidner pushed the Wolves to a 3-2 lead with a single. Tyler Presnell finished the UWG scoring surge off with a two-run homer over the right field fence, securing the Wolves a 5-2 advantage. This marked Presnell's third homer of the season.

During the eighth, Pearson was relieved by his right-hand man, senior Brendan Parks. Through seven frames, Pearson struck out seven batters and allowed three runs, as he would be tagged with one in the eighth. UWG responded with a run on a Jacob Bowman base hit, ending the eighth with the good guys holding a 6-3 lead.

West Georgia held on to win 6-4 after conceding one score in the ninth.

Parks finished out the game for the Wolves, securing his fourth save of the season. Through two frames, Parks struck out two batters and allowed only one hit.

BY THE NUMBERS
Lane Pearson grabbed his fifth win, bringing his record to 5-1. Tonight's seven strikeouts put his punch out total at an ASUN-best 67.

West Georgia and Jacksonville both tallied seven hits. Landon Weidner led UWG with two hits while five Wolves tallied one.

Tonight's win marks the second time the Wolves have secured a game one victory during an ASUN series. The only other was a 2-0 win at FGCU (March 21).
