Wolves Outlasted in Extras

MARIETTA, Ga. - UWG baseball fell 9-8 to the Kennesaw State University Owls in extra innings tonight at S. Walter Kelly Sr. Memorial Field in the rekindled in-state rivalry matchup.

Despite scoring four runs in the first, the Wolves (16-18, 7-8 ASUN) were edged out by the Owls (17-20, 7-5 CUSA), after the KSU was able to scrap four straight late scores and another in extras.

Cooper Prince sent the game into extras with his first UWG homer during the ninth.

Following the conclusion of the road game, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about what he saw tonight, stating, "We had some guys pitch some quality innings. Maverick Torres gave us a good start. Mason Phillips has been doing extremely well. Dosie (Dosie Drakeford) is a guy that we count on because we know he is going to do well. We also had some clutch hitting. We were down to our last out and Cooper Prince got a run with a home run. Things like that are huge. We are hoping that some of the good carries into this weekend."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his second-ever start for UWG was freshman righty Maverick Torres. In six innings across five games, Torres recorded five strikeouts and given up one hit while not allowing a run prior to today. For the Owls, KSU pitched 2024 First Team All-ASUN pitcher Bo Rhudy. Through 24 innings in 11 games, the sophomore righty posted a 2.63 ERA with 23 strikeouts coming into today.

The Wolves opened the game jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a Carter Dierdorf homer in the first. This marked the first baseman's 11th of the season. Following this, Tyler Presnell drove a Wolf home on a double to right field. UWG finished the top of the frame holding a 4-0 lead after Jacob Bowman and Tyler Presnell each recorded RBI base hits. KSU dashed this lead to 4-1 on a solo shot over the right field fence while still in the first.

UWG responded in the second with an RBI courtesy of Mason Cooper, pushing the Wolves advantage back to four. During the bottom of the frame, KSU cut the lead to 5-2 off of a UWG throwing error that advanced an Owl home.

To start the third, Torres was relieved by right-handed junior Gavin Mask. Through two frames, Torres struck out one batter and allowed one earned run. Still in the third, KSU dashed the West Georgia advantage to 5-4 on a two-run homer.

After not scoring in the third frame, Brady McDevitt crushed a two-run homer to put the Wolves up 7-4. This marked McDevitt's third home run this year.
