CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team fell in a midweek doubleheader to UAB on Wednesday night, dropping game one 7-5 before the Blazers run-ruled the Wolves in the finale.
GAME ONE
Despite a late five-score push by the Wolves, the Blazers' 6-0 start proved to be the difference maker in game one.
Starting in the circle for UWG in today's opener was Dixiana Sims.Â
After waiting out an hour and a half rain delay, it did not take long for the visitors from Alabama to get on the board. In the top of the first, a triple down the right field line put UAB up one. Following this score, back-to-back walks with the bases loaded secured the Blazers a 3-0 lead. Â
All was quiet over the next few frames, but like in the first, UAB added three runs to extend their advantage to 6-0 during the fourth.
In the sixth, the Wolves responded with their own three-run attack, kicked off by a Rylee Green RBI double into right field. Madison Vandergriff joined in on the fun by driving fellow Wolf home with a base hit. Makayla Register ended the pack's counterpunch by securing a run with a groundout RBI.Â
During the top of the final frame, UAB added an insurance run off of an RBI double, pushing their lead to 7-3 with time ticking for the Wolves. With valiant effort UWG delivered one last blow, cutting the Blazers' advantage to 7-5 courtesy of a Dixiana Sims two-run double, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
UAB won 7-5. Sims was tagged with the loss, bringing her record to 5-7.Â
GAME TWO
In game two, the Wolves started Kaprice Leonard. Through 18.2 innings across 12 appearances, Leonard posted a 10.12 ERA with eight strikeouts prior to today.Â
Similarly to game one, it was all Blazers early on. Following a 7-0 start through the first few frames, UWG cut the visitors' advantage to 7-3 in the third with a Blaire Bizette bomb over the left field fence, marking her 20th career home run. Bizette became the 11th player in school history to eclipse the 20 home run mark.
Following a scoreless fourth, the Blazers offense woke back up with a vengeance in fifth. The top of the inning finished with the visitors holding a 17-3 lead.Â
Leonard was tagged with tonight's game two defeating, pushing her record to 0-5 on the year.
