FGCU Sweeps Wolves in Saturday ASUN Doubleheader

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG softball team fell in both games of a Saturday doubleheader to FGCU, dropping a one-run decision in the opener before losing 10-5 in game two.

GAME ONE
It was a classic pitchers duel in the series opener as FGCU won 2-1 behind an unearned run in the first and a solo home run in the fourth.

UWG added a run on an RBI single by Madison Vandergriff in the fourth but that was the only run they could manage against the FGCU ace Allison Sparkman. The Wolves managed six hits but struck out 11 times.

To her credit, Jenna Samuel went toe-to-toe with one of the top pitchers in the ASUN, tossing a complete game while allowing just six hits and one earned run and took the tough-luck loss.

Vandergriff had two of the Wolves' six hits and drove in their only run.

GAME TWO
FGCU never trailed in game two either,  but waited until the third inning to score, then added one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and six in the sixth to open up a 10-1 lead.

UWG's one run to that point came on a Shelby Garrett RBI single to score Addison Sturdivant in the third inning.

The Wolves then added two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

In the sixth, UWG got singles from Blaire Bizette and Jacelyn Lahr and scored the first run on an error with Lahr driving in the second. An inning later, a walk, a single, and another FGCU error plated two more to account for the 10-5 final.

Vandergriff got two more hits in game two to lead UWG, who recorded eight total hits as a team.

UP NEXT
UWG and FGCU wrap up their series tomorrow with a noon finale. Senior Day ceremonies are set for pregame as the Wolves honor six seniors on the occasion of their final game at University Field.
