UWG Baseball Drops Game Two at Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - West Georgia baseball fell 3-2 to the Jacksonville University Dolphins tonight in Florida, securing JU the ASUN series win.

The Wolves (17-23, 8-12 ASUN) battled in another low-scoring pitching duel with the Dolphins (25-16, 14-6 ASUN), but late UWG free passes gifted JU the go-ahead run and the game two win. The Dolphins' had ten runners get on base by either walks or hit-by-pitch and their one earned run was from a leadoff homer.

After the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "Walks and hit-by-pitches hurt us. We need to minimize our mistakes. We can't walk so many. They (Jacksonville) didn't drive runs in, we gave it to them. I thought Sam Cole did outstanding tonight, but we our mound can't give so much away.

Continuing to discuss what he wants to see out of the team tomorrow, coach Smith said, "It's a big day. Each game is big for us. We are competing to get into the conference tournament. We are going to need to have a quality start out of Dudley (Seth Dudley) and we need to eliminate the free passes."

GAME SUMMARY
Junior righty Sam Cole made his 11th start of the season tonight. Through 50.2 frames across ten games, Cole held a 5.15 ERA with 34 strikeouts. Making his 11th start for JU was senior righty Collin Rotherme. Through 53 frames in 10 games, Rothermel posted a sixth-best in the ASUN 3.23 ERA in addition to placing second in the conference with 61 strikeouts coming into today.

The Dolphins opened the game going up 1-0 on a homer over the left field fence in their first at-bat. Following this hit, Cole immediately went back to work, catching the very next Dolphin swinging on a third strike.

Over the next four frames, Cole added four more punchouts while only conceding one hit and three lead off walks.

After giving up another walk during the sixth, the Florida native was relieved by senior righty Brendan Parks, who is typically reserved as the Wolves game one closer. In 5.2 frames, Cole punched out five batters, allowed one earned run, two hits and four walks.

In the seventh, Blake Bradford put UWG up by lazering a two-run double into center field, marking the junior's fifth double of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, an unorthodox defensive sequence that featured a pair of UWG walks, a catcher's interference and a hit-by-pitch, led to JU knotting the game at two apiece. The Wolves would escape the inning still tied after Parks secured a breaking ball punchout, his second of the frame.

Following another pair of walks, an error and a hit-by-pitch, JU secured a 3-2 lead in the eighth. This unusual succession of plays ended Parks' night on the mound, being rotated out for senior righty Will Dean with the bases still loaded and one out. UWG escaped the frame down just one heading into the ninth.

In the final frame, pinch hitter Hank Smith was able to get himself into scoring position after a wild pitch allowed him to take second following a single, but the Wolves could not drive him home. UWG fell 3-2.

BY THE NUMBERS
Brendan Parks was tagged with the loss, bringing his record to 3-3. In his 1.2 innings, he recorded a remarkable three strikeouts and had two unearned runs scored. Despite not giving up a hit, Parks did walked four and hit two.

After conceding a leadoff homer, starting pitcher Sam Cole showed exceptional poise by going the next 5.2 innings not giving up another run.

UWG out-hit JU 6-2 with each coming from a different Wolf.

After tonight, the Wolves' losing skid moves to five and the Dolphins' win streak shifts to seven.
