Wolves Outlasted by the JU Dolphins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - West Georgia baseball dropped game three today 6-5 to Jacksonville University, resulting in the Dolphins securing a ASUN sweep over the Wolves.

Powered by three runs in the seventh, UWG (17-24, 8-13 ASUN) battled back from down four to bring the game within striking distance, but the Wolves could not do enough late to overcome the red-hot Dolphins (26-16, 15-6 ASUN) at John Sessions Stadium. West Georgia's losing skid moves to six and the Jacksonville win streak pushes to nine.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith talked about what he saw today, stating, "We didn't get a quality start. We gave up five runs in the first three innings. Maverick Torres, Gavin Mask and Mason Phillips came in and did outstanding jobs in relief to keep the game where it was. I also thought we battled back and created some opportunities. The guys showed a lot of grit today. They don't panic when they are down, they just play the game. When guys got hurt today, Carson Mynatt stepped in and so did Noah Darden. They responded when they got their opportunity."

Continuing to talk about what's on the horizon for the Wolves, coach Smith said, "We are happy to have the midweek off, so guys can get some rest. It will give us a chance to position ourselves to go in and compete with Stetson, the top team in our division, and see what we can do."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his 11th start of the season today was senior righty Seth Dudley.  In 54.1 frames, the Florida native recorded a 4.47 ERA with 45 punchouts, which is tied for ninth in the league, coming into today. For JU, the Dolphins started left-handed junior Alex Walsh. In 40 frames across 11 appearances, Walsh boasted a 4.50 ERA with 26 punchouts prior to the series finale.

Similarly to game two, today's matchup opened with the hosts jumping out to an early lead. In the bottom of the first, a two-run RBI double followed by a sacrifice fly gave JU a 3-0 advantage.

It did not take long for the Wolves to respond. In the second frame, Blake Bradford cracked his sixth home run of the season, dashing the Dolphins' lead to 3-2.

Like watching a rerun of your least favorite episode of a good TV show, the third frame looked very similar to the first. One spot back in the lineup from before, JU again started their scoring run off with a double to left center. Following this, another sacrifice fly in the outfield pushed the JU lead to 5-2 and ended Dudley's day on the mound.

During the fourth, a single through the right side ballooned the hosts' advantage to 6-2.

After not scoring in over four frames, the UWG offense came alive in the seventh. Starting with a Noah Darden RBI double, the Wolves cut the JU lead to 6-3. Following this, a Dolphin error brought Carter Dierdorf home, but UWG was not done yet. West Georgia ended their counterattack with an RBI single courtesy of Mason Cooper, bringing the game within one.

In the eighth, it looked like UWG was going to knot the game at 6-6 after loading each bag, but Jacksonville did just enough to squeeze the third out before the Wolves could strike.

With two outs in the ninth, Cooper Prince pushed a fellow Wolf into scoring position with a single into right field, but JU was able to secure the third out before anything else could develop.

BY THE NUMBERS
Seth Dudley was tagged with today's loss. His record now sits at 4-4. In three innings, he allowed five earned runs off of five fits.

In Maverick Torres' two frames, the freshman pitcher struck out two batters and allowed one run.

In Gavin Mask's pair of scoreless innings, he did not give up a hit or walk. Mason Phillips achieved the same feat in his lone frame.

Prior to today's game, the series hit tally was tied at 10 apiece. Following the finale, West Georgia finished with 19 to the Dolphins' 17.

Blake Bradford and Cooper Prince's team-high two hits today pushed the pair to a UWG-best three hits in the series.

West Georgia's head-to-head record now sits at 1-5 against the Dolphins.
