UWG Baseball Falls to the Hatters in Florida

DELAND, Fla. -  West Georgia baseball dropped game one 6-2 to the Stetson University Hatters tonight at Melching Field at Conrad Park.

UWG (17-25, 8-14 ASUN) battled with SU (31-16, 18-3 ASUN), but four Hatters' runs in the second combined with the Wolves only tallying four hits, led to the hosts grabbing the Friday night ASUN victory.

West Geoegia was out-hit 8-4 with three of the hits coming in the UWG two-score frame. Four different Wolves recorded a hit.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith had this to say about tonight's matchup, "Their starter pitched extremely well. We couldn't really get anything going offensively. We only got four hits, so it was tough to rebound from that four-run inning. They scored off of self-inflicted wounds. Hit-by-pitch, walked guys and errors killed us today."

Continuing to discuss tomorrow's game two, coach Smith said, "We can't give Stetson so many opportunities tomorrow. We need to play some clean baseball. We got Lane Pearson going, so we feel good."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his first start for UWG was junior righty Gavin Mask. Coming into today, Mask posted a 4.50 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 18 frames across 15 appearances. For the Hatters, JU pitched right-handed sophomore James Hays. In 28.2 frames across six starts this season, the Georgia transfer boasted a 4.08 ERA with 28 strikeouts prior to today.

Following a scoreless first, Stetson was able to turn a loaded bases situation into a pair of runs following back-to-back hit-by-pitches. After this, Mask rotated out for Maverick Torres. The Hatters finished the frame with a 4-0 lead on a two-run base hit into left.

After not recording a hit throughout the opening three frames, a Carter Dierdorf walk followed by a Jack Witmer single, put UWG in scoring position during the fourth. Capitalizing on the Wolves on base, Brady McDevitt drove the pair home with a double to right field, dashing the SU lead to 4-2. With the bases loaded, it looked like UWG was going to strike again while the iron was still hot, but Stetson escaped the top of the fourth with the two-run lead.

SU added to the advantage in the fifth and sixth on a homer and then an error by the Wolves. Through six, the Hatters led 6-2.

UWG was held hit-less in the final three frames, going on to fall 6-2.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gavin Mask was tagged with the loss. His record now sits at 3-1. In 1.1 frames, Mask allowed three earned runs.

In Maverick Torres' four innings, he allowed two earned runs.

Ian Moore pitched in the final 2.2 frames. He struck out batters and did not give up a run.

Tonight's defeat pushes the UWG losing skid to seven.
