Wolves Balance UNF Series at 1-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UWG baseball secured a 9-3 win today over the North Florida Ospreys, evening the series at one apiece with a finale set for Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

Thanks to solid pitching and the Wolves (14-14, 5-6 ASUN) out-hitting the Ospreys (18-12, 7-3 ASUN) 13-7, West Georgia snapped its five-game losing skid with an away ASUN victory.

Cooper Prince led UWG with three hits. Following Prince, Jack Witmer, Landon Weidner and Tyler Presnell each recorded two.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "13 hits and nine runs is huge. Jack Witmer, Cooper Prince, they did great tonight. We have some guys out of the lineup and I thought the guys that filled those roles really stepped up. On defense, I thought we played a clean game. Gavin Mask pitched outstanding today. We are excited to get back on the field tomorrow.'

GAME SUMMARY

Right-handed junior Sam Cole made his eighth start of the season today for the Wolves. Through 39.2 frames, Cole posted a ninth-best in-conference 3.86 ERA with 26 strikeouts coming into the game. For the Ospreys, UNF started Bryson Treichel. In 33.1 innings through seven games, Treichel held opposing batters to a sixth-best in the ASUN .208 average while posting a sixth-best 2.70 ERA with 36 strikeouts.

UWG opened the game jumping out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI by Brady McDevitt in the top of the first. Still in the opening inning, UNF tied it up after a wild pitch allowed an Osprey to fly home from third.

In the second, Jack Witmer put the Wolves back on top 2-1 with an RBI double down the left field line. Following this, a UNF fielding error allowed a pair of Wolves to take home, extending the UWG advantage to 4-1.

West Georgia held this lead until a wild pitch in the third allowed the hosts to dash the advantage to 4-2.

For the first time today, neither team was able to get on the board during the fourth. In the fifth, UWG extended their advantage to 5-2 courtesy of a Landon Weidner RBI base hit. Still in the fifth, Tyler Presnell pushed the lead to 7-2 on a hard-hit double down the right field line.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cole was relieved by right-handed junior Camden Diamond. In Cole's four frames, he struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs. UNF finished the frame down 7-3 after they capitalized on an RBI single through the middle. Following this run, Diamond rotated out for junior righty Gavin Mask.

UWG went on to win 9-3 after scoring a run off a wild pitch in the sixth and hitting a solo homer in the ninth, courtesy of Hank Smith.

Through 4.2 innings, Mask struck out two batters and only gave up one hit.

Coach Smith briefly talked about what he saw from Mask today, stating, "He (Gavin Mask) commanded the zone with a good three-pitch mix. He located the zone early and kept their hitters off balance. He did an outstanding job."
