Wolves Outlasted in Alabama

HOMEWOOD, Ala. - The West Georgia baseball team fell to Samford University 10-7 tonight in Homewood, Alabama, bringing the Wolves' season record to 0-2 against the Bulldogs.

UWG (15-15, 6-6 ASUN) traded blows with Samford (18-15, 4-2 SOCON), but explosive fourth and fifth innings highlighted by seven SU scores pushed the Bulldogs past the Wolves at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

After the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "I thought we swung the bats well, nine hits and seven runs. The fourth and the fifth innings really hurt us. We gave up five hits and four earned runs in that inning. When you're competing with a team as solid as Samford, you can't give them that much."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his first college start today was freshman Maverick Torres. Through 2.1 innings across three appearances, the righty has recorded three strikeouts and has yet to give up a hit. For Samford, senior righty Brooks Rice made his ninth start of the season. In 16.1 frames across eight games, Rice posted a 9.37 ERA with 11 punch outs coming into today. In his appearance against UWG earlier the season, Rice struck out five Wolves and gave up one run through 3.2 innings.

West Georgia opened today's away contest going up 1-0 in the top of the first thanks to an RBI double down the right field line by Brady McDevitt.

In the top of the fourth, UWG pushed their advantage to 2-0 on an RBI base hit by Walt McConnell.

Through three innings, Torres kept his hit-less streak alive before being relieved by right-handed redshirt sophomore Davis Williams. Torres finished with two strikeouts today.

Following two quick scores by the Bulldogs while still in the fourth, Williams rotated out for junior righty Ian Moore with the game locked at 2-2. SU ended the frame holding a 3-2 lead with three still left on base. Williams was tagged with two earned runs as the first score came off a UWG throwing error.

The Wolves quickly responded, loading the bases during the fifth. With back-to-back walks, UWG regained a 4-3 advantage.

Through .2 innings, Moore switched out for junior righty Camden Diamond in the bottom of the fifth. SU extended their lead to 7-4 in this frame before junior righty Mason Phillips came in for Diamond.

Going into the seventh, UWG continued to get more Wolves time on the mound. After tallying a pair of punchouts in 1.1 scoreless innings, Phillips was replaced by junior right-handed pitcher Bryan Gomez. The hosts ended the inning up 8-4 on an RBI single through the middle.

For the first time since the fifth inning, the Wolves struck back. In the eighth, Jack Witmer recorded his third hit of the day with an RBI double, dashing the Samford lead to 8-5. Following this, Cooper Prince drove two more Wolves in on a base hit to center.

In the eighth, Gomez rotated out for junior righty Mason Hutsell with one run tagged against him. Tonight marked Hutsell's first UWG appearance. Samford ended the inning up 10-7 following an RBI double and a groundout RBI. Following the first score, righty Dosie Drakeford got the Wolves out of the frame.

During the ninth with the bases loaded, Tyler Presnell drove a runner in, but at the expense of a 6-4-3 double play. Samford ultimately held on to 10-8.

BY THE NUMBERS
Camden Diamond recorded the loss tonight, bringing his record to 0-1.

Through 5.1 innings across four games this season, freshman Maverick Torres has struck out five batters and not given up a hit.

Regarding how Torres played tonight, coach Smith said, "I thought he did an outstanding job tonight. Goes out there and commands his pitches. He was able to pitch ahead in the count and get outs."

Samford led tonight at the plate 14-9. In five at-bats, Jack Witmer posted a UWG-high three hits with three runs and an RBI.
