CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia softball went back and forth with the Bulldogs tonight at University Softball Field but fell 7-5 following a late Samford surge.
Despite getting off to a hot start with three runs in the first, UWG (9-28, 1-12 ASUN) was unable to overcome the Bulldogs (27-15, 8-1 SOCON) three-run homer in the sixth.
GAME DETAILS
Samford struck first with three hits in the opening frame, pushing one run across against UWG starter
Kaprice Leonard. UWG responded with three runs on three hits of their own. It all came with two outs, as
Blaire Bizette doubled to center, later scoring on a bunt-single by
Dixiana Sims.
Shelby Garrett, who drew a walk, scored alongside Sims on a two-RBI single by
Sky Ramos.
Leonard surrendered four walks and two hits in the second inning, and was eventually chased from the circle, but not before walking in a run.
Jenna Samuel came on in relief and the first batter she faced poked a single through the left side and scored two to put Samford back on top by a run.
UWG tied it up in the bottom of the third as
Jenna Samuel slugged a double that cashed in a two-out single by Ramos.
More two out magic pushed across a run in the fourth as a single by
Megan Waites and another Bizette double made it a 5-4, UWG advantage.
The lead then flipped back to the Bulldogs as Katie Campbell made the Wolves pay for a two-out walk as the three-run home run turned a one-run lead into a 7-5 deficit.
UWG went on to fall 7-5 to the Bulldogs.
