UWG Baseball Outlasted by Florida Gulf Coast

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball was edged out by Florida Gulf Coast University today at Cole Field, falling 5-4.

The Wolves (19-30, 9-18 ASUN) battled to the very end with the FGCU Eagles (24-26, 14-13 ASUN), but a three-run fifth frame proved to be too much to overcome for UWG, who struggled at the plate throughout the series finale. West Georgia did not tally a hit through the 3-6 frames, ending the day being out-hit 10-5.

GAME SUMMARY
UWG started senior Seth Dudley in the series finale. In 64.1 innings over 12 starts, the righty boasted a 4.48 ERA with 49 strikeouts coming into today. For FGCU, the Eagles pitched Ryland Bozenhard. In 43.1 frames through 12 appearances this season, the sophomore righty posted a 5.19 ERA with 35 punchouts prior to today.

In the bottom of the second, Carter Dierdorf put the Wolves up for the first time in the FGCU series with a solo home run over the center field fence. This marked his 13th of the season. Following the Dierdorf long-ball, Jacob Bowman pushed the Wolves to a 2-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly to right.

It did not take long for the Eagles to respond. During the third, back-to-back base hits through the left side, knotted the game at two apiece.

Following a scoreless fourth, FGCU jumped out to a 3-2 lead after a double to center brought an Eagle home and put one on second and third. Before the fifth was over, Florida Gulf would drive the pair of runners home with a single, ending the frame up 5-2.

After securing the two runs in the second, UWG did not tally a hit until Dierdorf opened the seventh with a double down the left field line. Following this double, Brady McDevitt cracked a second straight West Georgia two-bagger to cut the FGCU advantage to 5-3. Still in the seventh, Bowman drove a Wolf home with a sacrifice hit to second, ending the frame with UWG down 5-4.

The Wolves continued to fight, but FGCU did just enough to hold on to the win.
