FGCU Eagles Take Games One and Two at Cole Field

CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG baseball lost to Florida Gulf Coast University tonight at Cole Field 4-2 in game one and 14-0 through eight innings in game two.

The Wolves (18-29, 9-17 ASUN) battled in the series opener, but could not get enough going offensively to overcome a FGCU (23-26, 13-13 ASUN) four-run advantage. Similarly to the first game, the West Georgia offense continued to stall in second, resulting in a doubleheader sweep.

UWG was out-hit today, 27-7 with 19 of the FGCU hits coming in game two.

Following the doubleheader, head coach Jeff Smith said, "It took us a while to get some things going in game one. It was a 4-2 game. Very competitive. We gave them four freebies. Two errors, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. In game two, we just had zero at the plate. We couldn't get anything going and we gave up an eight-spot. Before you know it, it's out of hand. We just need to focus and get back to worrying about competing."

GAME ONE SUMMARY
Starting on the mound for UWG in game one was righty Lane Pearson. In 71.1 innings across 12 appearances, Pearson boasted a 3.53 ERA with 79 strikeouts while holding the batters he has faced to a .241 average coming into today. This placed him second in the ASUN in strikeouts and ninth in ERA. For FGCU, the Eagles pitched sophomore Evan Dempsy. In 48.2 innings across 11 appearances, the 2024 ASUN All-Freshman Team pitcher led the ASUN with a 1.48 ERA with 48 strikeouts coming into today.

Following a quick opening inning, FGCU got on the board in the top of the second with a double down the left field line.

In the fourth, the Eagles pushed the lead to 3-0 off of base-hit RBI into left field and a UWG throwing error that allowed an FGCU runner to take home.

After Pearson rotated off the mound for Gavin Mask to start the sixth, Florida Gulf pushed their advantage to 4-0 with a solo home run. During the bottom of the sixth, Jack Witmer put the Wolves in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt that advanced runners to second and third. Following this, Landon Weidner cleared the bases with a single into left, dashing the deficit to 4-2.

UWG battled the rest of the way, but could not get enough going at the plate to stage the comeback.

The Wolves fell 4-2.
