JONESBORO, Ark. - Behind three golfers in red figures, the UWG women's golf team shot a school record 280 in the final round of the Lady Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
It was the site of last season's record-setting performance, but on Tuesday the Wolves bested that score by five shots, posting an eight-under team, 18-hole total to finish the 54-hole event with a team score of nine-over par.
"We set a goal today to have the best score of the day. The girls rose to the challenge," said head coach Will Snodgrass. "I couldn't be happier for the girls."
The Wolves' 280, which was the lowest round any team posted in the tournament regardless of round, was led by a four-under 68 from Sofia Mondragon who finished in seventh place. Mondragon bested her career-low by two strokes and was bogey-free with four birdies.
Sophomore Sophie Dhaliwal also posted a career-low, finishing with a bogey-free round of 69. Dhaliwal finished in 10th place individually and made three birdies.
Emma Bair added a two-under 70 to the mix as the senior ade five birdies on the final day to finish tied for 27th. Anna Olesen was consistent in her final round, making 15 pars, two bogeys, and a birdie to post a 73. Olesen finished in a 61st-place tie.
Rounding out the lineup was Myla Rookard who shot her best round of the event with a 76, which also represented a career-best round for the freshman.
"To see them celebrate as a team at the end was far and away my favorite moment," continued Snodgrass. "Every player competed and every player performed. Again, a truly great team effort!"
The Wolves began the day in seventh place and climbed to sixth on the final day, passing Troy in the process. Tournament host Arkansas State, who shot five-under on the final day, won the event by one shot over Murray State.
UWG has one final fall tournament, set for next week at the Edisto Island Challenge.
