Box Score HOMEWOOD, Ala. - The UWG softball team dropped their midweek non-conference matchup against Samford on Wednesday by an 8-1 tally.
West Georgia (7-15) fell behind early and was unable to recover. Samford pitcher Olivia Treece kept the Wolves in check, allowing just one run across seven innings of work. After a flurry of offense in the first four frames, both teams were held scoreless over the final three innings as the Bulldogs (8-13) secured the win.
UWG threatened early in the first, putting two runners on base after walks from
Megan Waites and
Jenna Samuel, but the Wolves were unable to capitalize and left both stranded. Samford took advantage in the next half inning, opening the scoring with two runs on three hits. The Bulldogs looked to add more, but
Victoria Hardy cut the momentum short by throwing out Olivia Shaw at second, sparking three straight outs to end the inning.
Following back to back singles from
Madison Humber and
Dixiana Sims with one out,
Mickey Coslor drove
Madison Humber in on a groundout to first base putting the Wolves on the board, cutting the deficit down to one.
Despite giving up a run in the bottom of the second, Samford quickly seized control scoring four runs off of four hits and a walk forcing the West Georgia starter
Delaney Hoyle out of the game and extending their lead, making it 6-2.
In response to giving up four runs, the Wolves threatened in the top of the third, loading the bases with one out after a single from
Jenna Samuel, a walk by
Ella Oswalt, and a
Madison McDonald base hit up the middle. However, West Georgia couldn't capitalize, as they grounded an inning-ending double play to halt the rally.
Freshman
Cacie Cutright, who entered in relief the previous inning, settled in during the bottom half. Despite surrendering a leadoff double to Shannon Weems, Cutright retired the next three batters to keep Samford off the board.
After retiring the Wolves in order, the Bulldogs extended their lead with RBI doubles from Olivia Shaw and Katie Campbell. The two-run frame pushed Samford ahead 8-1 headed into the fifth inning.
