University of West Georgia Advances to Year Three of NCAA Division I Reclassification Process

6/24/2026 10:00:00 AM

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia Athletics Department proudly announced on Wednesday morning that UWG has been approved by the NCAA Division I Strategic Vision and Planning Committee to advance to the third and final year of the DI reclassification process.

"This latest recognition by the NCAA represents the culmination of efforts by numerous individuals, including our student-athletes, coaches, service team members, campus offices, UWG leaders, and a vast array of supporters near and far," stated Jason Carmichael, UWG Director of Athletics. "We are excited about our next step forward in our reclassification journey. The nearing completion of our transition is now palpable to all of us who love UWG and UWG Athletics. We are excited to continue pushing ahead."

Initially planned as a four-year reclassification period, UWG notified the NCAA last summer of its intent to pursue full member status on an abridged three-year track, provided they meet the updated academic, financial, and operational benchmarks. During year two of the transition (2025-26), the NCAA conducted a comprehensive compliance audit on campus and found that the university met the requirements to move to the final year of the reclassification period.

The successful transition has been driven by West Georgia's pursuit of excellence in competition, in the classroom, and throughout the community, coupled with the university's unwavering commitment to compliance and integrity.

UWG enters its third Division I season in the Fall of 2026. On July 1, 2026, the Wolves will officially join the United Athletic Conference as a full-fledged member. UWG proudly offers 15 NCAA sports, including seven sports that will kick off year three of DI in the Fall. Below are West Georgia's 2026 Fall home openers.
