Carrollton – The West Georgia Wolves' drive to turn around the fortunes of their young baseball season got off to a strong start here Tuesday. West Georgia pinned a 14-4 loss on the visiting Shorter Hawks on a cloudy, windy day at Cole Field.
Right fielder #
Andrew Parrish# was the big weapon in the Wolves' attack. The senior from Slidell, La., went three-for-four with five RBI. His big blow was a fourth inning grand slam that broke open a 4-2 game. The homer, Parrish's fourth of the season, added to his third inning, RBI single to make for a huge afternoon.
Parrish wasn't the only UWG hitter to enjoy a big day. Center fielder #B.J. Smith# had three hits and scored three runs; catcher #
Michael Bridges#, third baseman #
Cody Jackson# and shortstop #
Carson Tate# had two hits apiece.
West Georgia's big performers in this win weren't limited to offense. #
Toby Jordan# turned in a determined effort on the mound, working seven-plus innings, to pick up his first win of the season. Though he surrendered 13 hits, Jordan struck out eighth and surrendered but two earned runs.
Tuesday's win improved the Wolves to 3-7 on the season; Shorter fell to 3-5. The victory also avenged the 8-4 defeat Shorter pinned on UWG in the February 4 season opener in Rome.
West Georgia was scheduled to return to action Wednesday at home vs. Augusta. However, the threat of severe weather has led to the game's postponement. It will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Wolves' next action is now set for Friday when Wayne (Mich.) State visits Cole Field for the first of back-to-back double headers.
