Carrollton, GA - The UWG volleyball squad struggled with momentum Tuesday evening at The Coliseum, falling in straight sets to visiting Shorter, 3-0.
The loss was the fourth of the season for West Georgia and the second in the past week as the Wolves fall to 8-4 on the year and 3-2 in Gulf South Conference play. The win moves Shorter to 5-5 overall this season and 1-3 in GSC action.
Things started out looking well for the Wolves, as West Georgia came out of the gate firing on all cylinders in building an 11-5 lead. But Shorter came right back with seven straight points, taking a 12-11 lead and eventually outscoring the Wolves 13-10 over the final half of the set to take a 25-21 win.
The second set was a mirror image of the first, in that Shorter built a 10-5 advantage before West Georgia responded to tie the set at 11. But that was where the similarities stopped, as the two teams exchanged points for the remainder of the set with the Hawks coming out on top with a marathon 30-28 victory and a 2-0 lead.
The final set was all Shorter, as the Hawks took an early 12-2 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-14 victory to take the match.
West Georgia hosts Valdosta State on Friday evening at The Coliseum. First serve for that match is set for 7 p.m.
