Carrollton, GA - For the third time this season, the UWG volleyball squad went to five sets. But unlike the first two times, Friday evening's match at Christian Brothers ended with the Wolves on the low side of a 3-2 score as West Georgia suffered its third Gulf South Conference loss of the season.
The Wolves have now had two straight matches that have gone to five sets, as last Friday night, UWG took down previously unbeaten Valdosta State 3-2 at The Coliseum. The loss drops the Wolves to 9-5 on the season and 4-3 in GSC play.
Behind a strong effort from junior middle #
Tiesha Alston#, the Wolves took command of the match early in the first set. Alston had five kills in six attempts with no errors in the Wolves' 25-21 victory in the opening set. But the lead didn't last for long, as CBU came right back, taking the second set 25-18.
West Georgia took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in the third set and things looked solid in the opening points of the fourth set, as UWG opened a 3-0 lead. But CBU erased that lead quickly and built a three-point lead that they held for the bulk of the remainder of the set. The Wolves caught the Bucs at 20-20, but CBU outscored UWG 5-3 over the remainder of the set to take a 25-23 win and send the match to a fifth set.
In the deciding set, the teams battled back-and-forth until UWG had a match point, leading 14-13. But two straight points put the momentum back on the homestanding Bucs. West Georgia tied the match one more time at 15-15, but CBU scored two straight again to take the victory.
West Georgia will take on Union on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs are coming off of their first GSC victory of the season Friday evening, taking down Valdosta State 3-0.
