Union outlasts Wolves in five set thriller

Carrollton, GA - Facing their second road match in as many days, the West Georgia volleyball squad nearly pulled off a comeback against Union in Jackson, TN Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs handed the Wolves their second straight loss in a 3-2 five-set thriller.

The match marked the third straight five-set match for the Wolves and the second straight loss, putting UWG a 2-2 in five-set matches this season. The Buildogs won the first two sets, then West Georgia won two straight to force a fifth and deciding set.

The first two sets saw West Georgia commit 12 of the 18 team hitting errors on the afternoon, with the Wolves hitting less than .175 as a team in that span. Union took the first set by erasing a 6-1 early UWG lead and going on to win 25-20. The second set saw the Bulldogs put down 15 kills to the Wolves' 10 en route to handing the Wolves a 25-19 loss.

Down 2-0, the Wolves turned on the afterburners in the third set, hitting .538 as a team with no hitting errors to pull within a set a 2-1 with a 25-10 victory. The fourth set was closer, but West Georgia took advantage of nine Union hitting errors to take a 25-21 victory and pull even in the match.

In the fifth set, the two teams went back-and-forth for the first nine points of the set and the final set was knotted at 9-9 at that point. But Union reeled off a 6-2 run to win the race to 15 and take the set and the match.

#Emily Reul# led the Wolves with 15 kills, followed by 12 kills from junior #Tiesha Alston#. Reul also had 14 digs to go along with 16 from #Melissa Holt# to lead the UWG defensive effort. #Kendall Williams# added three blocks for the cause.

West Georgia falls to 9-6 on the year and the Wolves have a quick turnaround before Thursday night's Volley Pink event to go along with a crucial Gulf South Conference matchup with West Alabama. The Wolves are now 4-4 in GSC play and will have one more GSC match to close out the first half of the conference season.
