Carrollton, GA - This weekend gave the 2013 UWG Wolves a peek at some of the best competition in the South Region, as West Georgia fell twice on Saturday, losing 3-0 to Rollins in the morning session, then falling 3-1 to Palm Beach Atlantic in the Gulf South/Sunshine State Conference finale at The Coliseum.
Against Rollins, the Wolves hit .180 as a team and sophomore #
Tiffany Ancrum# led UWG with 14 kills in the loss in straight sets. Junior #
Helen Menchinger# added 10 kills to the tally and #
Melissa Holt# had 13 digs to lead the UWG defensive effort.
The Wolves lost the first set against Rollins 25-21, the fell 25-20 in the second set. The third and final set was another close affair, with Rollins coming out on top 25-23 to close out the win. Rollins moved to 16-4 on the year with the victory.
In the finale, the Wolves took on the top team at this year's crossover in Palm Beach Atlantic. The Sailfish have been in the rankings multiple times this season and came into the match with an 18-3 record overall.
West Georgia took the first set 25-23, collecting 16 kills at a .333 hitting percentage in that set. In the second set, PBA came back strong, taking a 25-8 victory followed by a 25-18 win in the third set. In the fourth, West Georgia pushed the Sailfish to the hilt, but in the end, Palm Beach Atlantic came out on top 25-22.
Holt had her 19th straight match this season with double-digit digs, entering the 30-dig club for the third time this season with 32 digs. It was her second time this week with at least 30 digs, as she set a school mark Thursday night against West Alabama with 40 digs. The senior now has 1,384 digs in her career at UWG and needs just 31 digs to surpass Stephanie Singleton for the all-time lead at UWG.
West Georgia falls to 10-9 on the season and the Wolves make the turn this week, as UWG heads to North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville next weekend to begin the second half of the 2013 Gulf South Conference season.
