Carrollton, GA - After an emotional victory can be a dangerous time for any team, and the UWG volleyball squad found that out firsthand Friday evening in Rome, Ga., as the Shorter Hawks upended the Wolves in straight sets for the second time this season, handing West Georgia a 3-0 loss.
West Georgia came into the night coming off of a thrilling four-set victory over four-time defending conference champion West Florida on Tuesday evening in Carrollton. The win was just the third in the history of the series with the Argonauts.
The night was one of extremes on both sides of the court, as the Hawks hit at a torrid .312 pace on the night. West Georgia, which came into the match leading the Gulf South Conference in hitting percentage, had only 16 kills with 21 attack errors in the match, turning in a negative hitting percentage for the first time this season.
The Hawks took the first set 25-16 followed by a 25-14 win in the second set. In the third and final set, the Wolves and Hawks were tied at 4-4 early in the game, but an 11-0 run spelled the end of the night as Shorter went on to win the third set 25-12.
West Georgia falls to 12-11 on the season overall with a 7-6 record in Gulf South Conference play. Shorter moves to 14-9 on the year with a 7-5 mark in GSC action. The Wolves will play the second match in a four-match road swing on Tuesday at Lee, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
