Carrollton, GA - The UWG volleyball squad snapped a three-match losing streak Tuesday night in Pruitt Hall on the campus of the University of West Alabama, as the Wolves used a thrilling come-from-behind effort to take a 3-1 victory over the Tigers in Gulf South Conference play.
The road has not been kind to the Wolves this season, as UWG came into the night with a 2-8 record away from The Coliseum in Carrollton. That included four straight losses on the road since October 26. But that disappeared for but a moment Tuesday evening, as the Wolves rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the fourth set to win the match.
West Alabama opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set, scoring five straight points to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the two teams went back-and-forth for the bulk of the set before a #
Tiffany Ancrum# block and a service ace from #
Kayla Hartman# provided two straight points and the final difference in a 25-23 win for the Wolves.
Ancrum provided the fireworks in the second set, as the Wolves never trailed in that frame. The Tigers stayed close, however, until the 19-17 mark, when Ancrum had a block and a kill in consecutive points. That pushed the Wolves ahead by four and West Georgia closed out the set with a 25-19 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Serve receive woes came back early in the fourth set for the Wolves, as West Alabama built an 18-11 lead and looked to be headed for a fifth set in the match. Senior #
Emily Reul# got West Georgia moving in the right direction with three kills and #
Kendall Williams# finished off the set and the match with a kill for the final point.
West Georgia moves to 13-13 overall on the season and 8-8 in conference play. The Wolves will play the final two matches of the season at home this weekend, taking on Christian Brothers on Friday evening on Senior Night, followed by a Saturday afternoon match against Union in the regular season finale at 2 p.m.
