Preview
* The final two games of the 2013 season feature a pair of teams that most would refer to as an end of the year gauntlet. First up is the West Texas A&M Buffaloes in Canyon, Texas as a part of the GSC/LSC 1st and 10 Challenge.
* There are six teams that have been ranked at one time this season on the UWG schedule this year, with Valdosta State acheiving the highest ranking as the top-ranked team until two weeks ago. WTAM is the team that achieved the second-highest rating of the year, getting as high as fourth in the nation before falling a few weeks back.
* West Georgia is coached by Daryl Dickey, who is in his sixth season at West Georgia. He is 18-41 at UWG and has an overall record of 46-56. West Texas A&M is led by interim coach Mike Nesbitt, who was named head coach just after the beginning of this season.
* West Georgia comes into the game at 5-4 on the season and the Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak last week in the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week by beating Florida Tech 28-14 at University Stadium in Carrollton.
* West Texas A&M is 7-2 on the season and the Buffaloes just fell out of the NCAA Division II top 25 for the first time this year after a lost last weekend to Eastern New Mexico. The Buffs are one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the nation, scoring 90 points in a win over McMurry earlier this season in Abiline, Texas.
* As a team last week, West Georgia rushed for 303 yards in the win over Florida Tech. It marked the second time this season that UWG has rushed for more than 300 yards in a single game. The Wolves hit for 328 yards earlier this season against Point.
* Defensively, the Wolves are the top team against the pass in all of Division II, giving up just 134 yards per game through the air. West Georgia has picked off 10 passes this season, with
Marcus Sayles leading the team with three interceptions. Two of the interceptions have been returned for touchdowns, one by
Rocky Capobianco and the other by
Donovan Jackson.
* UWG senior receiver
Bobby Burum is among the top-10 in UWG history in every major career receiving category. he is eighth in yards with 1,340, touchdowns with 10 and in receptions with 89. He needs seven catches to move up in receptions, needs 140 yards to move up in that category and three touchdowns to become the third-leading scoring receiver in school history.
* Burum had four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown last week. He has five touchdown receptions this season, a career-high.
* West Georgia's offensive line had two seniors,
Brandon White and
William Wright, that garnered preseason recognition, and they showed their senior leadership against Miles in the first home matchup of the year, as they led a 12-play, 70 yard drive for a late touchdown that all but put the game away for UWG.
* Local product
James Dugan emerged as a special teams weapon this season. The sophomore from Carrollton leads the Gulf South Conference with a 42.9 yards per punt average and is 11th in the nation in punting average. He has nine punts of 50 or more yards this season and has dropped 16 punts inside the 20 in his first season at UWG.
* The Wolves have three special teams touchdowns this season, including a 93-yard kickoff return from running back
Derick Seward last week against Valdosta State. It was the 13th time in school history that a returner broke out for a kickoff return for a touchdown.
* The Wolves show up at or near the top of the nation in two statistical categories. UWG is second in the nation in fewest passing yards allowed and is fourth in penalties per game.
* Cornerback
Marcus Sayles has been a bright spot for the UWG defense in his redshirt freshman season. The Alpharetta native picked off his first pass against Mars Hill in the season opener and has three on the season.
A Season For the Record Books
The 2013 season has been a roller coaster ride for the West Georgia Wolves, but part of that roller coaster has been the players who have stepped into the University of West Georgia football history books with their performances this season.
Dallas Dickey - QB Touchdowns
It started in the opening game of the season with sophomore quarterback
Dallas Dickey, as he scored a touchdown in that game. He only needed one to stand alone among quarterbacks at UWG, as his 11th career touchdown set the school career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He has since added one more score to make it that much harder for anyone to break.
Donovan Jackson - Interceptions
Against Miles in the second game of the season,
Donovan Jackson became the 16th player in school history to record at least six interceptions in a career. On that pick, he returned it for a touchdown, his second career interception for a score. That ties the school record for most career interceptions returned for a touchdown.
Bobby Burum - Receiving Yards
Agianst Midwestern State in the third game of the season,
Bobby Burum hauled in a touchdown just before halftime. On that pass, he became the 13th player in school history with 1,000 career receiving yards. He has since moved up on that list and is currently eighth all-time with 1,340 passing yards.
Seth Hinsley - Rushing Yards
Against Shorter this season, the Wolves had the first of two players to join the 1,000-yard club at UWG, as
Seth Hinsley crossed that threshold in grand style with a 72-yard run against the Hawks. He has continued to move up the ranks and is currenlty 12th all-time with 1,348 yards rushing in his career.
Quan Jones - Rushing Yards
On the road against North Alabama, senior
Quan Jones became the fifth player on the year to step into the history books, as on his second rush of the game, he became the 16th player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a career. He currently has 1,191 yards and is the 15th-leading rusher in school history. tive picked off his first pass against Mars Hill in the season opener and has three on the season.
