Wolves head west to UWA for weekend battle

Carrollton, GA - Riding high on a three-game winning streak since returning home for the first time since December, the West Georgia Wolves will put their standing as the top team in the Gulf South Conference on the line Saturday afternoon at Pruitt Hall in Livingston, Ala., as the Wolves will take on the West Alabama Tigers in GSC action. Tip time for the contest is set for 5 p.m.

Higginbotham Assist/Turnover
UWG senior guard Thomas Higginbotham has been putting up staggering numbers in the assist-turnover ratio department this season. Higginbotham now has 51 assists and 10 turnovers this season, taking care of the ball with a 5-1 ratio.

The 20/20 Effect
The West Georgia Wolves have now had five times, including three of the last four games, where two players have scored at least 20 points in a given game. The Wolves came very close to four straight, as Marcus Dortch scored a career-high 22 points against West Florida and Deonta Stocks had 19. Alex Abreu and Emory Bernard were the most recent, as each scored 20 points against North Alabama on Thursday evening.

Trends beginning to show
In a 12-3 season that has been fairly succesful thus far, trends are difficult to find for the Wolves. But one trend that is starting to show is in West Georgia's starts on the year. The Wolves come into Thursday's game against North Alabama holding a perfect 7-0 record overall this season when UWG has scored first in games. In Gulf South Conference games, UWG is 4-0 when scoring first. It is one of the only categories where West Georgia is perfect in the positive and has all their losses in the negative side of the category.

Double-Doubles in 2014-15
The Wolves' lineup in the current season has not been the biggest in the history of UWG basketball, but West Georgia has been playing well on the boards this season. Junior Jovany Austin is the Wolves' leading rebounder at 5.9 boards per game, and he also all three of the double-doubles that UWG has produced this season. He had 23 points and 14 rebounds againist Point earlier this season and 17 points with 11 rebounds against Carver. Saturday against Valdosta State, he had 20 points and 10 boards in the Wolves' 10th victory of the season.

Double-Figure Scoring
There have been 58 double-figure scoring moments for the Wolves this season thus far, with Stocks scoring in double-figures in each of the first 15 games of the year. Alex Abreu is second with 13 of the 13 games in double-figures. Jovany Austin and Emory Bernard have each had double-figure output in nine games Austin leads the team with three double-doubles on the year. Dortch has scored in double-figures in eight of the last 10 contests.

In the GSC
West Georgia has won three straight games since losing to Shorter and has moved into a tie with Alabama Huntsville and Delta State for the top spot in the Gulf South Conference. Both the Wolves and Statesmen are on the road on travel partner weekend, with DSU taking on Mississippi College. Alabama Huntsville is the only team among the top three at home this weekend.
