Wolves win thriller in Carrollton

Carrollton, GA - Junior Marcus Dortch scored a career-high 25 points and sophomore Deonta Stocks buried two free-throws with 13 seconds left to help power the West Georgia Wolves to their 13th victory of the season Thursday night at The Coliseum. The Wolves took down Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College in a thrilling come-from-behind victory in front of a raucous crowd, beating the Choctaws 86-85.

How it Happened: For nearly 13 minutes after the opening tip, the Wolves and Choctaws palyed to a draw, as Mississippi College continued to show their improvement since the first meeting between the two squads. In that game, West Georgia took down MC in Clinton, Miss., in the middle of a four-game losing streak to begin the Gulf South Conference portion of their schedule.

Since that start, MC is 5-2 against Gulf South Conference competition and looked poised to pick up another GSC victory Thursday. At the 7:24 point of the first half, the Wolves took the first lead of more than four points in the game after a three-pointer followed by a free-throw from Dortch gave West Georgia a 33-28 advantage. UWG pushed their lead to as many as eight points twice down the stretch in the first half, but behind a 28-point effort on the night from Tory Rice, Mississippi College kept the game close as the Wolves led by a slim 46-44 margin at the half.

The second half was very similar to the first, as both teams traded shots throughout the period and neither team was able to build or maintain a lead of more than four points in the entire half. But late in the game, it seemed that Mississippi College was gaining momentum, but senior Taylor Cochran stopped that momentum cold with two minutes left.

Mississippi College had the ball with an 81-79 margin at that point and had been tough to stop down the stretch. But Cochran had other plans, stepping in front of a pass at the top of the key and taking it the length of the floor for a dunk that tied the game at 81-81. But Mississippi College retook the lead and with 58 seconds left, led by four at 85-81.

Stocks then took over for the final minute of the game, hitting a three-pointer followed by the two free-throws with 13 seconds left to lift the Wolves to victory. Dortch led UWG with 25 points on the evening, Stocks added 16 points, followed by Alex Abreu with 12 and Emory Bernard with 10 points. Dortch was on fire from three-point range, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Odds and Ends: Marcus Dortch has either tied or set a new career-high for scoring in five of the last 11 games ... The free-throws at the end of the game were strangely reminiscent of Stocks' first game in The Coliseum, when he hit two free-throws at the end of the game to beat North Alabama 74-72 ... Abreu had seven assists in the game, the sixth time this season where he has had at least six assists.

What it Means: There is now a six-way tie for first place in the Gulf South Conference standings ... Delta State and Alabama Huntsville, two teams that came into the night leading the GSC, each lost and the four teams that were tied for second each won ... Four teams among that six-way tie are scheduled to play each other on Saturday, as Union plays at Shorter and West Georgia hosts Delta State.

Up Next: The Wolves will play for a chance to put some distance between themselves and part of the pack as Delta State comes to town. The Wolves won the first meeting in Cleveland and a win would give West Georgia the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Statesmen.
