Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves picked up a huge Gulf South Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, upending the Delta State Statesmen by a 90-85 score and completing a season sweep of DSU. The win moves the Wolves to 14-4 on the year and 9-4 in GSC action.
What it Means: The Wolves came into Saturday's matchup as one of six teams tied for first in the conference with an 8-4 record. But it was more than that, because all six of those teams were three games ahead of the seventh and eighth place teams as the only squads in the conference with winning records. The top eight teams go the GSC tournament and the top four host on Super Tuesday before the semifinals on the first Friday in March. West Georgia's win gave the Wolves a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Statesmen, as UWG won earlier this season in Cleveland, 87-84.
How it Happened: The game was a battle between two sophomore phenoms, as UWG's Deonta Stocks and Devin Schmidt laid everything on the line Saturday afternoon. When the dust settled at the end of the game, Schmidt had 35 points in 36 minutes and Stocks poured in 31 in 33 minutes, leading their respective teams.
But early in the game, Schmidt was the one doing all the damage for Delta State, as he had the game's first 12 points for the Statesmen in the first eight minutes of the contest while the Wolves built a 17-12 lead. West Georgia built as much as an eight-point advantage during that span, but Delta State came roaring back, tying the game at 24-24 with just over five minutes left in the contest, then took the lead at the 2:36 mark at 31-30. DSU held that advantage until just before the buzzer sounded, as
Alex Abreu banked a three-pointer in as the halftime horn sounded, giving the Wolves a 37-36 lead.
But the momentum stopped there, as the Statesmen came out of the gate strong in the second half, outscoring the Wolves by a 20-9 margin in the first eight minutes of the period, leading 56-46 with 12:43 left in the game. West Georgia chipped away at that advantage over the next four minutes, and another three-pointer from Abreu put UWG back on top at 60-59 with 8:32 left.
The two teams exchanged leads for the next four minutes, but with the game in its seventh tie of the day at 69-69 and with 3:58 left in the game, Stocks buried a three-pointer that put West Georgia ahead for good. Stocks scored 12 of his team-high 31 points in that final four minutes, as the Wolves led by as many as eight points in that stretch. A Delta State three-pointer at the buzzer provided the final five-point result.
Abreu added 19 for the cause and also had seven assists, four rebounds and two steals on the evening. Abreu and Stocks combined for a 7-of-12 night from the three-point line.
Marcus Dortch scored 14 in the contest and Jovany Austin 10 to round out the double-figure scoring for West Georgia. Schmidt and Jack Madgen were the only players in double-figures for the Statesmen, with Schmidt scoring 35 and Madgen 11.
Odds and Ends: Deonta Stocks had his fourth 30-point game of his career against the Statesmen ...
Alex Abreu has had seven games this season with six or more assists and has had seven assists in each of the past two games ... Stocks has now played in 39 games for West Georgia and has scored in double-figures in every one.
Up Next: The Wolves hit the road next weeked on a trip through northern Alabama. West Georgia will take on their second-straight opponent that is tied for the Gulf South Conference lead with a battle against Alabama Huntsville on Thursday. On Saturday, UWG will take on North Alabama.
