UWG Looks for more road success in Alabama

Carrollton, GA - Eight games remain in the 2014-15 regular season, and the West Georgia men's basketball squad currently sits tied atop the Gulf South Conference standings. To remain there, the Wolves will have to best 2014 GSC Champion North Alabama on Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall in Florence, Ala. Tip time is set for 4:00 p.m.

UWG vs. North Alabama
In baseball, there is a saying that goes, "Momentum is in the hands of tomorrow's starting pitcher." That could be an appropriate term for Saturday's 67th meeting between the West Georgia Wolves and North Alabama Lions. The two teams hold two of the three longest winning streaks in the Gulf South Conference currently and something has to give in Flowers Hall tomorrow afternoon. The Wolves won the first meeting in Carrollton, outracing UNA to a thrilling 92-85 result at The Coliseum.

UWG Breakdown
The Wolves are one of the hottest teams in the Gulf South Conference, winning six of their last seven games and West Georgia has not had a losing streak this season. UWG's only loss since a January 5 setback at Shorter was a last-second loss to West Alabama on the road. The Wolves lost that one by a 73-71 count, but were without Gulf South Conference scoring leader Deonta Stocks, who was forced to miss the game to attend the funeral of a family member. West Georgia is one of the top scoring teams in the GSC, averaging 87.3 points per game.

UNA Breakdown
The North Alabama Lions, the 2013-14 Gulf South Conference champions, have been on a roll with three straight victories. That includes Thursday night, when UNA took down a West Alabama squad that came into the week as one of four teams tied for first place in the Gulf South Conference. The Lions average 77 points per game on the season, but no player averages more than 15 per game.

Matchup to Watch
North Alabama has size that the Wolves will have to contend with, especially with Marcus Dortch out until later on in the month of February. But UNA guards Nathan Spehr and Brandon Herman against the UWG duo of Deonta Stocks and Alex Abreu will be one to watch on Saturday. The Wolves' backcourt is one of the strongest in the nation, and whichever backcourt can control the tempo will give their team an upper hand.
