Carrollton, GA - When you have just made it to the postseason, that's when the afterburners really need to come on, and UWG head coach
Michael Cooney will be looking for that takeoff speed early and often on Saturday afternoon in The Coliseum. The Wolves will take on Christian Brothers at 4:00 p.m. or approximately 30 minutes after the women's game.
UWG vs. CBU
There have been two firsts on the road this season for the West Georgia Wolves, and the first one came in the first run through the GSC, as West Georgia knocked off Christian Brothers at CBU for the first time in the series, and for just the third time in the 13-game history between the two programs. This time is a very different experience for the Wolves, as
Marcus Dortch, who torched the Bucs for 19 on 5-of-9 from three-point range, will not be playing. The 67-point output was the second-lowest scoring night for the Wolves.
UWG Breakdown
West Georgia leads the Gulf South Conference in scoring, and the Wolves are deadly when they are able to get the backcourt going on the defensive front. The Wolves have 197 steals on the 2014-15 season, but 105 of those have come from just three players. Deonta Stocks leads the team with 46 on the year, followed by
Alex Abreu with 36 and
Thomas Higginbotham with 23. West Georgia is a very dangerous team in transition, as there is no lack of ball-handling abilty among any of the top four guards.
CBU Breakdown
The Buccaneers came into the season with high expectations, especially after beating the Memphis Tigers in an exhibition game before the regular season began. Christian Brothers has since won 11 of their 20 games, and are in the middle of the pack with an 8-8 GSC record. Trey Casey is the top shooter on the team and has 52 on the season from the three-point line, one of the best in the Gulf South Conference.
Matchup to Watch
The matchup to watch on Saturday afternoon will be between the UWG guards and the CBU guards, as the Wolves will need to put pressure on the Buccaneers on the perimeter. On the offensive side, it will be interesting to see if Casey and Abreu will put on a shooting clinic. Both are among the best three-point shooters in the conference and will be looking for treys early.
