Men's Basketball Preview: Super Tuesday

Carrollton, GA - For the first time in the history of The Coliseum, a West Georgia basketball team will play a playoff game, and it just so happens that it will happen twice in the same night. The GSC has gone to a new format for the annual postseason tournament, electing to have the top four seeds of the eight teams that reach the tourney host the first round. West Georgia earned the second seed and will take on 7th-seed Christian Brothers after the women play North Alabama in the opening game.

The women's game will tip on Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m., while the men's game will tip at 8:00 p.m.

UWG Breakdown
For the first time under head coach Michael Cooney, the Wolves are a champion, as a win over West Alabama coupled with a loss by Alabama Huntsville gave the Gulf South Confernece a three-way tie for first place, and since the GSC does not break ties, the Wolves, Tigers and Chargers are named regular season Tri-Champions. Now the Wolves, led by GSC Player of the Year Deonta Stocks, will look to take that a step further and win the GSC Tournament and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA South Regional.

A Dangerous Trio
Senior points guards Alex Abreu and Thomas HIgginbotham are an amazing 1-2 punch at the point for the Wolves. The pair have combined for 205 assists on the season, and Abreu alone has 121. He is in the top-50 in the country in assists per game and Higginbotham is second in the nation in assist-turnover ratio. Abreu and Stocks also are the top two three-point shooters in the GSC in terms of shooting percentage.

Matchup to Watch
When West Georgia and Christian Brothers met on February 7, the big story that night was CBU's Sidy Saul. The Wolves did not shoot well, and he owned the paint in that contest. Marcus Dortch being back will help, but the Wolves' matchup with Saul will likely determine the outcome of the game.
