Carrollton, GA - The 2016 Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference South Region Crossover began Friday morning, and the West Georgia Wolves competed in two matches on the day, falling 3-0 to both Embry-Riddle and Rollins.
The day started with UWG head coach
Trina Braden and her squad taking on her former head coaching post in the Embry-Riddle Eagles. The Wolves struggled out of the gate in that one, falling 25-10 in the opening set. West Georgia had just six kills in the first set while the Eagles committed no errors en route to a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set saw West Georgia with a .280 hitting percentage, and the frame was a see-saw battle for the first 37 points, as ERU held a slim 19-18 lead at that point. But a 6-0 run closed out the set and gave Embry-Riddle a 2-0 lead in the match. The third and final set saw sophomore
Katie Hanson with five kills, but the Wolves came up on the short end of a 25-20 score. UWG was led by Hanson in the match with seven kills and
Madi Fleming had 15 assists.
The evening session saw the Wolves face off with the Rollins Tars, and West Georgia held a slim 16-15 lead midway through the set. But Rollins came roaring back, outscoring UWG 10-6 to take a 25-22 victory and a 1-0 lead. In the second set, West Georgia picked up three kills each from
Autumn Burnette and
Madi Fleming, but the Tars took control of the match, moving to a 2-0 advantage with a 25-18 victory.
In the third set, West Georgia had just seven kills compared to Rollins with 15, as the Tars closed out the day with a 3-0 win after a 25-15 victory in the final set. Burnette led the way with 10 kills, five blocks and six digs to lead the UWG effort. Fleming took care of the setter duties in the match, finishing out with 20 assists.
West Georgia plays at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in their final match of the 2016 GSC/SSC South Region Crossover, taking on the Florida Tech Panthers.
