Wolves fall to Valdosta State on the road

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves pushed Valdosta State in Sunday afternoon's first set at The Complex in Valdosta, but the Blazers defended their home turf successfully, handing the Wolves a 3-0 loss in Gulf South Conference play.

In the meeting earlier this season, the Wolves came out firing on all cylinders against the Blazers in the opening set, and Sunday was a similar result with the Wolves working to put together a late rally. Valdosta State led from the outset, and held a commanding 17-12 advantage midway through the set. The Blazers even took a 24-20 lead, and West Georgia pushed with three straight points, but VSU closed out the set at 25-23.

Freshman McKenna Wharton led the Wolves in the opening set with three kills, with Paige Berriochoa and Kelcie Zimmer adding a pair of kills each to lead the offensive effort.

But in the second and third sets, the Wolves had a combined 12 kills to 15 attacks, as Valdosta State powered to a 25-13 and 25-14 victory to take the match in straight sets. The Wolves fall to 4-20 on the year and 1-13 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia returns home this Thursday and Friday, taking on West Alabama on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m., followed at the same time on Friday evening against Mississippi College.
