Carrollton, GA - The first half of the Gulf South Conference season came to a close on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, as the West Georgia volleyball squad fell by a 3-0 count to the Union Bulldogs.
Set 1 - Union 25, UWG 15
The match, which was the third in a four-game homestand and the second in as many days, was delayed at the start, but once things began, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, then continued to push until the completion of the first set. Union won that game 25-15 on the back of 11 kills and four services aces, also taking advantage of eight attack errors from West Georgia.
Jaida Allen and
Faith Pearson each tied for the team lead with two kills in the opening frame.
Set 2 - Union 25, UWG 22
The Wolves jumped out to an early advantage in the second set, opening up a 10-5 lead, then pushing that to a six-point advantage at 15-9. But a timeout cooled the Wolves and reignited the Bulldogs, as Union outraced the Wolves to the conclusion with a 16-7 run.
Madi Fleming and
Autumn Burnette were a solid duo in the set, with Burnette delivering on four kills and Fleming dishing out six assists.
Set 3 - Union 25, UWG
A 5-0 run midset was the different in this one, as the Wolves and Bulldogs went back-and-forth for the first 23 points on the frame. With Union leading 12-11, the Bulldogs scored five straight points, taking a commanding lead in the set at 17-11. Union closed out the set with a 25-18 victory and a 3-0 win in the match.
West Georgia falls to 4-13 on the season and 1-9 in Gulf South Conference play heading to the second half of the GSC season. The Bulldogs move to 7-11 on the year and 4-6 in conference play. The Wolves will be back in action on Tuesday evening, taking on the Alabama Huntsville Chargers in The Coliseum in the final match of a four-match homestand.
