Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia volleyball squad opened the final weekend of the season on Friday evening in Jackson, Tenn., taking on the Union Bulldogs in the first of a two-game road stint to close out the year. The Wolves fell in that opener to the Bulldogs, 3-0 at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
Defending their home court on Senior Night, the Bulldogs came out swinging, jumping out to a 13-7 lead early in the match. On the back of a serving game that delivered five service aces in the first set and the power of senior Deja Moorer, the Bulldogs continued to push, extending that lead to 19-11. West Georgia went on a 4-2 run to cut the advantage to 21-15, but Union scored the final five points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
West Georgia kept things close in the second set, as the frame was tied at 20-20 late in the set. Youth led the Wolves in this set, as freshman
Faith Pearson had three kills while sophomore
Devon Dickey contirbuted to a .000 hitting percentage from the Bulldogs with 12 digs in the set. But Union went on a 5-2 run after the late tie, putting the Wolves away and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Bulldogs started out strong and looked to be ready to put the match away before Pearson and the Wolves mounted a comeback. With the Wolves trailing 13-9, a kill from Pearson sparked a rally, and West Georgia outscored Union 9-5 to tie the match at 18-18. Down the stretch, West Georgia led 23-20, but this time a 6-1 run from the Bulldogs put the match away in straight sets.
The Wolves will conclude the 2016 season over the weekend, taking on Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon, with first serve from Memphis, Tenn. scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST).
