Carrollton, GA - The Lee Flames exacted a measure of revenge on the West Georgia Wolves on Friday evening in Cleveland, Tenn., turning the tables on the Wolves with a 3-0 victory in Gulf South Conference play.
The Flames were the only win thus far for the Wolves in conference play this year, as West Georgia beat Lee 3-0 back on September 30 in Carrollton. In that contest, West Georgia fired out strong early, and UWG looked to be doing the same thing for a short period time in the opening set, taking a quick 4-1 lead. Lee caught West Georgia at 8-8, then took a lead, never looking back en route to a 25-16 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Sophomores
Paige Berriochoa and
Lindsey Thomas each accounted for three points in the opening set, as the Wolves hit .171 as a team. That changed in the second set, as the Wolves hit just .043 and no player had more than two points produced en route to a 25-10 loss, giving Lee a 2-0 lead in the mattch.
West Georgia had more kills in the third set than in the previous two, hitting .143 in the game with 11 kills, but it wasn't enough to offset the 17 kills from the Flames in the set. Sophomore
Devon Dickey and freshman
McKenna Wharton each had three kills in the set to lead the UWG offense.
Madi Fleming and
Kelcie Zimmer split the setting duties on the night, as both connected on 12 assists in the match. Dickey was the only other player to reach double-figures in a category, as the sophomroe had 15 digs in the three-set match. West Georgia falls to 4-24 on the year and 1-17 in Gulf South Conference action. The Wolves return for the final two days of the season next Friday and Saturday, taking on Union and Christian Brothers on the road.
