CARROLLTON, Ga. - It wasn't the Senior Day that anyone hoped for on Saturday as the West Georgia football team fell to Florida Tech, 45-21 on Saturday afternoon at Ra-Lin Field in Carrollton.
The highlight of the game was
Dylan Donahue picking up a half sack in the first half, breaking the Gulf South Conference record for single-season sacks with 13.5.
West Georgia turned the ball over four times on the day, turning into 17 points off of turnovers for Florida Tech.
Both defenses flexed their muscled on their opening drives as the Wolves forced a three-and-out on the first possession, and got good field position after an FIT punt. West Georgia, however, would turn the ball over on downs on their ensuing drive.
After the Wolves defense forced a fumble and
Jason Carr jumped on the ball, Lamarcus Franks put the Wolves in good position with an 18 yard scamper to set up shop on the FIT eight-yard line.
Willie Candler would connect with
Brandon Walton on second and goal to open the scoring, and with a successful PAT, the Wolves went up 7-0 early in the opening quarter.
Florida Tech drew even when Manny Abad intercepted Candler's pass and took it 26 yards for a touchdown, tying things up at the 4:46 mark in the first quarter.
Gabe Freeman provided the West Georgia offense with great field position when he picked off a Mark Cato pass at the 14-yard line, setting up the Wolves deep in Florida Tech territory. UWG wasted no time as on the first play following the interception, Lamarcus Franks ran for the 14-yard score and gave the Wolves a 14-7 lead after
Hunter Heck's PAT.
The Panthers responded with a scoring drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by Trevor Sand that tied the game for the second time, this one at 14-14 with 6:45 left in the first half.
With less than a minute left in the first half, Florida Tech gained their first lead of the game on a 21-yard scramble by FIT quarterback Mark Cato, putting the Panthers up 21-14 with only 23 ticks on the clock.
To start the second half, West Georgia went three-and-out and punted to FIT, who promptly returned the ball deep into UWG territory, but the UWG defense forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back.
Two plays later, FIT forced a fumble and scooped it up, returning it to the UWG nine-yard line. West Georgia's defense held strong, keeping the Panthers out of the endzone, and forcing FIT to settle for three, extending their lead to 10 with 5:41 on the clock in the third quarter.
Florida Tech made it a 17-point game with a 22-yard score from Antwuan Haynes with just under four minutes on the clock.
The UWG offense then marched down the field, capping off a nine-play, 73-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Willie Candler to Qa Walker, cutting the Panther lead back to 10 as time expired in the third quarter.
Florida Tech would go on to add two more scores in the final quarter as the Panthers capped off the victory in Carrollton.
The win drops the Wolves to 6-4 overall with one regular season game remaining. West Georgia travels to Pensacola, Fla. for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday afternoon at Blue Wahoo Stadium.
