Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia volleyball squad finished off a four-match weekend on Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses, falling to Ohio Valley and host Bellarmine 3-1 at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ken. For her efforts, senior
Jaida Allen was named to the All-Tournament Team for the weekend after averaging 1.40 blocks per set on the weekend with a total of 21 blocks in four matches.
Ohio Valley 3, UWG 1
The morning session saw a pair of Wolves in
Katie Hanson and
Jaida Allen reach the double-figure mark in kills, with Hanson picking up 14 kills and Allen 12 from the middle blocker spot. Ohio Valley took the win in the first set by a 25-22 count.
In the second set, Hanson started things offf with a kill, which spearheaded four-straight points to open the frame. Ohio Valley came back and tied the set at 10-10, and the two teams played to a stalemate over the next nine points. The Wolves finally took a solid lead at 19-17, then never lost the advantage again, powering to a 25-21 win to tie the set at 1-1.
In the third set, Ohio Valley opened up with a 5-2 lead, but the Wolves came storming back, taking their first lead at 11-10, then building a a 13-10 cushion. The Wolves kept that three-point lead for the bulk of the set, leading 23-20 in the final points. But Ohio Valley outscored the Wolves 6-1, taking a 2-1 lead in the match with a 26-24 win. In the final set, Ohio Valley powered past West Georgia by a 25-18 count.
Devon Dickey and
Tessa Watson led the back line effort on the day, with Dickey collecting 19 digs and Watson 14 for the Wolves. Allen led the front line with seven blocks in the contest.
Bellarmine 3, UWG 1
In the opening set of the final match of the day against host Bellarmine, the Fighting Knights came out swinging, taking advantage of a tough front line in a 25-16 victory. The Wolves were held to -.071 hitting in the opening set, while the Knights had 12 kills with just six errors.
In the second set, Bellarmine jumped out again to a 10-5 lead, but the Wolves came roaring back, tying the set at 18-18. With Bellarmine on set point,
McKenna Wharton delivered a kill, putting the Wolves back into the set, then West Georgia put it away with a 27-25 victory to tie the set at 1-1.
In the final two sets, Bellarmine took full control, winning 25-16 and 25-13 to close out the match. Freshman
McKenna Wharton led the Wolves with 17 kills in the match, followed by
Katie Hanson with 12 kills. Freshman setter
Madi Fleming delivered on 29 assists and completed a double-double with 13 digs. Dickey had her second-straight match with 19 digs.
The Wolves return to action on Tuesday evening, opening Gulf South Conference play on the road against the Alabama Huntsville Lady Chargers at Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Ala. West Georgia will have the 2016 home opener on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., taking on West Florida at The Coliseum.
