Carrollton, GA- After losing against UAH earlier this week, UWG Volleyball continues conference play this weekend in their first set of home games. They will face West Florida on Friday at 7 p.m. and Valdosta State on Saturday at 10 a.m. Come out and support Head Coach
Trina Braden and your Wolves at the Coliseum this weekend as they take on some tough competition at home.
The UWF Argos have started the 2016 season 4-4, including a match against Wheeling Jesuit- the defending division two national champions. They are currently ranked #25 in the AVCA national poll. They were also picked to finish #1 in the GSC preseason coaches' poll for the sixth consecutive year, with four players selected to the eight-person preseason all-conference team. Senior libero Tori Martella returns this year and has already received GSC Defensive Player of the Week Honors after week one. Strong outside hitter Corisha Smith also returns this season after finishing the 2015 season with 286 kills, 2.9 kills per set, and 22 service aces.
Valdosta State finished the 2015 season 23-7 overall and 17-3 in conference play. They lost the in semifinal match in the GSC tournament last season. Head Coach Mike Swan leads the 2016 team in his fourth season at VSU. The Blazers are currently 3-5 overall, and appear to be struggling to replace the skill of last year's star senior setter Jessica Codato. The traditionally strong Blazers return 12 players from the 2015 season and are looking to be just as successful this season and make it to the GSC tournament yet again.
The Wolves are channeling all their energy from Tuesday night's loss at UAH into practice this week, looking to redeem themselves as they continue conference play against two tough competitors this weekend. Come support the Wolves at home on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Live stats and video will be available for both matches.
