Home Opener Spoiled by West Florida

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves opened their 2016 home season on Friday evening at The Coliseum, falling to 25th-ranked West Florida by a 3-0 count in Gulf South Conference action.

The Wolves came into the match with a 3-5 record on the year and an 0-1 start to the conference portion of the schedule after a loss to Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday. Friday brought a change in the lineup for West Georgia, as head coach Trina Braden went with freshman Tricia Melagari at libero to lead the back line. The freshman had 11 digs, leading a UWG effort that had 40 total digs on the night.

West Florida opened the match with a 25-15 win in the first set, committing just three hitting errors in the frame. It was more of the same, as the Wolves had a negative hitting percentage in both the first and second sets, while UWF won the second 25-14. In the first two sets, the Wolves had 17 hitting errors compared with six from the Argos. The third and final set saw the Wolves and Argos battle closely early in the game, but West Florida pulled away late for a 25-17 victory.

West Georgia was led on the evening by sophomore Paige Berriochoa, who had six kills on the night. UWF's Holly Mattmuller led all hitters with 12 kills in the three-set match.

The Wolves remain at home on Saturday, taking on the Valdosta State Blazers at 10:00 a.m. at The Coliseum.
