Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves closed out an early weekend road trip with a loss on Friday evening, falling 3-0 to the Mississippi College Choctaws in Clilnton, Miss.
West Georgia was led by sophomore
Katie Hanson in the match, as the outside hitter had 10 kills, followed by freshman
McKenna Wharton, who had eight kills.
Madi Fleming had 19 assists and
Tessa Watson led the back line with nine digs in the match.
Set 1 - Mississippi College 25, West Georgia 19
The Wolves opened the set by holding a two-point lead through the majority of the first 20 points, as freshman
McKenna Wharton and sophomore
Haylea Mannebach led the way with three kills each in that span. Mississippi College caught West Georgia at 14-14, then took a 17-14 lead. The Choctaws kept that lead and a little bit more, taking the largest lead of the set at 23-17. West Georgia followed that with two straight points to cut the MC lead to 23-19, then the Choctaws closed out the set with a pair of points to win, 25-19. Wharton led the Wolves with four kills in the set and junior defensive specialist
Tessa Watson had six assists.
Set 2 - Mississippi College 25, West Georgia 17
Mississippi College jumped out to an early lead in the second set, opening up a 4-1 lead from the outset, then pushing their lead out to 9-3 through the first 12 points. Junior
Kelcie Zimmer then served the Wolves back into contention, helping to pull UWG to within a point at 10-9. At that point, MC went on an 8-4 run, pushing their lead out to five again at 18-13. The Choctaws maintained that lead and pushed it out to eight points by the completion of the set, winning 25-17.
Set 3 - Mississippi College 25, West Georgia 21
In the third set, the Choctaws jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, then West Georgia roared back with an 8-1 run, taking their first lead of the set at 10-9. The two teams battled back and forth until Mississippi College took a 17-14 advantage with just eight points to go for the Choctaws. West Georgia went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to one at 19-18, but a UWG attack error gave MC another two-point advantage at 20-18. The Choctaws then outscored the Wolves 5-3 to take the match at 3-0.
West Georgia returns home on Tuesday evening, taking on the North Alabama Lions in a 7:00 p.m. match at The Coliseum.
