Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The trip through the state of Mississippi this weekend ended with a loss on Sunday afternoon, as UWG soccer lost 1-0 to the Mississippi College Choctaws.
Shutout or be shutout seems to be a growing trend for the Wolves in the 2021 season, as eight of UWG's nine contests thus far on the year have ended in a shutout victory for the winning team. West Georgia has been on the winning side of those shutouts four times on the year, but three of the last four games decided with a shutout have ended with a UWG loss.
The Wolves went on the attack early in this one, as
Sadie Prince took the first shot of the match with just 41 seconds gone in the opening period. Mississippi College keeper Camilla Cevallos picked up the save on the shot and the two teams were off and running. That was the way things would go throughout the first half, as UWG keeper
Chanceley Book and Cevallos kept both teams off the scoreboard in the opening period. Book had four saves in the first half and Cevallos had the one save at the beginning of the period.
Mississippi College would get on the board early in the second half just under five minutes into the period. MC's Avery Hederman received a pass off of a corner kick and delivered a low shot to Book's right, finding the back of the net and giving the Choctaws a 1-0 lead. The Wolves had three shots on goal in the second half, but none found the net as UWG moved to 5-4 on the year and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play. MC is now 8-3 overall and 6-1 against GSC opponents.
West Georgia will return home this weekend for a four-match homestand, taking on Christian Brothers and Union this weekend followed by Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama next weekend. The Wolves will face CBU at 5 p.m. on Friday and Union on Sunday at 1 p.m.
