Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWG volleyball's return to the Coliseum was spoiled Friday night by a red hot Shorter team as the Wolves fall to the Hawks 3-2.
Facing a team that hasn't tasted defeat in their last eight matches, the Wolves struggled to finish the match as they fall to 8-8 (2-4 GSC) on the season. After winning the first two sets, West Georgia's attack errors began to mount, committing 21 attack errors in the last three sets.
West Georgia came out strong in the first set jumping out to a 10-4 lead capitalizing on four errors by the Hawks. Shorter began to find their rhythm halfway through the set, but the Wolves maintained a 15-11 lead. UWG responds with a 6-1 run to take full control of the set pushing their lead to 21-12. The second set was a dominant one for the Wolves as they quickly jumped out to an 8-1 lead.
Kaylyn Buchanan's fourth block of the set gave the Wolves a 14-5 lead and all of the momentum. West Georgia never took their foot off the gas as a kill from
Caitlin Frazee put UWG up 19-9 in the set. Shorter had no answer for the Wolves onslaught as
Autumn Mayes' back-to-back kills won the set for the Wolves 25-13.
The third set was very competitive to start as the two teams where all tied up at 11-11 halfway through. Shorter's Lacee Glover sparked a 6-0 run giving the Hawks a 17-11 forcing a UWG timeout. After trading kills, Shorter caught fire going on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-14.
The fourth set proved to be the most competitive set of the match with
Emilee Harris' two kills getting it started for the Wolves giving UWG a 8-6 lead. The back-and-forth action continued until West Georgia went on a 3-0 run to force a Shorter timeout with the score sitting at 15-12. The Hawks respond with a 5-1 run of their own to force a UWG timeout. The teams continued to trade points until a 4-0 run by Shorter wins the set 25-21.
The momentum from the fourth set carried over to the fifth as the Hawks jumped out to an 8-4 lead courtesy of a 4-0 run forcing a West Georgia timeout. A kill from
Caitlin Frazee put a stop to Shorter's run momentarily until The Wolves hitting woes flared up again. Four attack errors from UWG helped Shorter take a 13-7 lead late in the set. There was no quit in the Wolves as they kept battling but the deficit was too much to overcome as Shorter took the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Emilee Harris led the Wolves in kills with 14 while
Kaylyn Buchanan had a game-high seven blocks. UWG volleyball will look to get back on the winning track with the Lee Flames coming into town tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
