Women's Golf Claims GSC Championship in Mobile

Cowart Finishes Second

MOBILE, Ala. – For the second time in school history, the West Georgia Wolves women's golf team is the Gulf South Conference Champion after winning the team title at Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Alabama on Monday.

The Wolves didn't have their best stuff on Monday, shooting a final round 316, but thanks to two solid rounds on Sunday, they had a 19-stroke cushion heading into the final round.

The 20th-ranked Lee Flames made it interesting down the stretch, shooting a final round 298 to come within one shot of the Wolves. UWG finished the tournament with a 54-hole team total of 908 while Lee turned in a 909. West Georgia's 908 is the fifth lowest score in Gulf South Conference Championship history.

It's the first GSC Championship for head coach Todd Selders, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program. West Georgia won it's first GSC Championship in women's golf in 2017 at Callaway Gardens.

"I could not be more proud of the team and coaches. Coach Golightly and Coach Lohbauer did an excellent job with the girls these past three days," said Selders. "I'm almost at a loss for words since it's my first conference championship."

In the individual championship segment, Ainsley Cowart came up one shot shy of claiming medalist honors as her final round 74 puts her in second place. Lee's Supuschaya Srinchantamit shot a 72 on Monday and birdied her 54th hole of the tournament to break the tie and claim the individual medalist honor.

Cowart was consistent on Monday, rolling in 14 pars and a birdie with just three bogeys. Her 220 total ranks as the second best 54-hole score in a GSC Championship in school history behind a 219 from Franziska Bremm in 2016.

West Georgia finished with three golfers in the top-10, with Cowart joined by Maddy Schultz and Michelle Bagsic.

Schultz finished the tournament with a Monday 76, good for a fifth-place finish and a 224 total. Bagsic was the 36-hole leader, but shot 86 on Monday to finish tied for ninth.

The final round for Ari Samuel was an 85, giving her a 238 total and a 20th-place finish. Katherine Densmore finished with a final round 81 and tied for 24th individually.

"We appreciate all the support we have received from our administration and university," added Selders. "The team is very excited as they should be. Now it's on to Regionals."

With the win, West Georgia now automatically qualifies for the NCAA South Regional. That tournament will be held Monday, May 3rd through Wednesday, May 5th at Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tennessee.
