CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG men's basketball team secured their third straight win after a 97-87 win over the Montevallo Falcons Saturday afternoon.
West Georgia put on an offensive masterclass as the Wolves shot a season-high 59% from the field and a season-high 52% from three in route to their seventh win of the season.
The two teams looked evenly matched out of the gate with neither team able to go up by more than five points for majority of the half. UWG took a 15-10 lead about seven minutes into the game courtesy of a Seth Brown-Carter three. Montevallo started to find their offense and took a 29-27 lead until a bucket from Michael Zabetakis gave the Wolves the lead back which marked the fifth lead change of the half. Zabetakis' basket sparked a 15-8 run for West Georgia that was capped off by a layup from Zabetakis that took us into the break with UWG up 43-37.
West Georgia outrebounded the Falcons by 10 in the first half while they also shot 51.5% from the field and 50% from three.
The momentum from the end of the first half carried over to the second as the Wolves used a 14-6 run, out the break, to take a 57-43 lead just four and a half minutes into the half. UWG continued to pour it on as a three from Seth Brown-Carter gave West Georgia their largest lead of the night at 66-49 with 12:30 left to play. The Wolves were cooking offensively and looked to put the Falcons away as another Seth Brown-Carter three made it a 72-56 game. Facing a 16-point deficit, the Falcons didn't lay down and used a massive 16-4 run to cut the deficit to four with 4:51 left. UWG responded in a big way as they shot 6-6 from the field to close the game which ended any chance of a Montevallo comeback.
The Wolves had four players score in double figures as Michael Zabetakis led the way with 22 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and four assists. Kadeim Jones, Seth Brown-Carter, and Deng Nhial were the other double-digit scorers for UWG. Jones finished with 21 points while Brown-Carter finished with 18 and Nhial with 16. West Georgia will be back in action on Monday for a road conference battle against Mississippi College which is set for 7:00 p.m.
