Wolves Swept on Day 1 in Pensacola

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWG baseball team made a late run at the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola, but the Wolves were unable to recover from an early deficit, losing 10-7 in the 2022 Gulf South Conference opener. In game two, the Argos jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first and held off the Wolves the rest of the game in an 8-4 victory.

Game 1 - UWF 10, UWG 7
Anthony Calabro and Davis Schwartz opened the scoring in this one in the top of the first, as Calabro was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning. The junior stole second, then came home on a Sam Ladner single to give the Wolves an early 1-0 advantage. In the bottom of the first, three of the first four hitters for UWF reached base, including a two-run double that sparked a four-run inning to give the Argos a 4-1 lead as the teams exited the first.

The Wolves' bats went cold at that point, as UWG went down in order in each of the next three innings. In the other dugout, the Argos added five more runs in that span as the two teams entered the sixth inning with UWF leading 9-1.

West Georgia would plate three runs in the top of the sixth as Brody Wortham led off the inning with an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. After a strikeout, the next three batters reached base either on a hit by pitch or on a walk. Fuzzy Furr was the second batter of the inning to be hit by a pitch, with that at-bat coming with the bases loaded to give UWG its first run since the first inning. Jonathan Logsdon drove home two runs with a two-out single as the Wolves cut the lead to 9-4.

Schwartz would pick up three more RBI in the top of the 7th with a three-run home run, scoring Wortham and Calabro and cutting the UWF lead to just two at 9-7. That would do it for the UWG scoring in the game, as West Florida added another run in the bottom of the eighth for the 10-7 final.

Wortham and Schwartz each had two hits on the day, with Schwartz leading the way with four RBI. Calabro and Wortham each scored two runs in the game.

Game 2 - UWF 8, UWG 4
For the second-straight game, both teams scored in the first inning, with West Florida repeating Game 1's efforts with a four-spot in the inning while the Wolves put up two runs.

Brody Wortham extended his strreak early in the game, belting a single in his first at-bat to extend the hitting streak to 22 games. Later in the inning, Davis Schwartz and Fuzzy Furr each singled in a run, giving the Wolves an early 2-0 advantage. The Argos rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning, scoring all four of their first-inning runs with two outs.

West Georgia went cold again for the next three innings while West Florida added three more runs for a 7-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Edgar Cruz led off the inning with a single, then Wortham belted his third home run of the season to cut the lead to 7-4.

That was as close as the Wolves would get, as West Florida would add a run in the bottom of the 6th for the final result.

Ronny Piepmeier went two innings on the day, striking out the first five batters he faced in the game. Wortham, Schwartz, and Jackson Webb each had two hits in the game, with Wortham and Schwarts each picking up four hits over the course of the doubleheader.

West Georgia will be back on the diamond against the Argos in Pensacola on Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
