Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. - As opening days go, this one went about as well as
Jeff Smith would have asked for during preseason.
Anthony Calabro
His new-look UWG baseball squad pounded the visiting Kentucky State Thorobreds on Saturday afternoon, outscoring KSU 31-2 over the course of the two games. Game one saw the Wolves pound out six doubles in a 14-1 victory. With a day filled with heavy gusts of wind and wind chill temperatures hovering in the middle-20s, game two was called due to inclement weather after five innings with West Georgia leading 17-1.Â
Game 1 - West Georgia 14, Kentucky State 1
Jackson Hodnick,
Ronny Piepmeier, and
Andrew Smith combined for a fantastic start to the season in Game 1 on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field as the Wolves won 14-1 over the Kentucky State Thorobreds.Â
The trio allowed one run on five hits in the opener, striking out 12 and walking two to give the Wolves all they needed on the mound. Hodnick started the game, going four shutout innings with seven strikeouts and four hits allowed. Piepmeier worked the next two innings, allowing a run on one hit with four strikeouts and Smith closed out the game with a perfect inning.Â
The 6-7-8 spots in the lineup were big on the day, as
Fuzzy Furr,
Collin Moore, and
Jackson Webb went a combined 7-for-11 with three RBI and seven runs scored on the day.
Brody Wortham and
Anthony Calabro were effective at the top of the order as well, with Wortham going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the game. Calabro was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two RBI and three runs scored in the game.Â
The first run of the year came in the second inning when Webb and
Edgar Cruz delivered on back-to-back two-out doubles, with Cruz driving in Webb to open the scoring on the season for the Wolves.Â
Game 2 - West Georgia 17, Kentucky State 1
Starter
Jonathan Hickman went the route in Game 2 to take the victory, allowing a run on three hits and delivering on seven strikeouts. Every starter in the game had at least one hit and one run scored on the day.Â
Hickman started the the game with a single allowed, but his defense turned that runner directly around with a 1-6-3 double play and Hickman induced a groundout to shortstop for an unconventional inning of facing the minimum.
Brody Wortham led off the bottom of the inning with a single, one of his two hits in the game, then he promptly stole second and third to give the Wolves a runner at third with no outs.
Anthony Calabro singled to the shortstop, scoring Wortham for the first run of the game. That would do it for the Wolves in the inning, as the teams headed to the second with UWG leading 1-0.Â
After Hickman sat down the Thorobreds in order in the second, newcomer
Fuzzy Furr delivered the first home run of the season, leading off the top of the second inning with a bomb for a 2-0 lead. That would do it for the Wolves in the inning, as a double-play turned the ball back over to Hickman. The junior from Ringgold struck out the side in the third, setting up the next big inning. Five hits and six runs later, the Wolves exited the third inning with an 8-0 lead in the game.Â
The Wolves pounded out three extra-base hits in the inning, with Wortham,
Jonathan Logsdon,
Collin Moore, and
Edgar Cruz each delivering an RBI hit in the frame. Cruz and Logsdon were the big run producers, as each had a two RBI single. West Georgia continued to rake in the bottom of the fourth, scoring nine runs in that frame to take a commanding 17-1 lead into the fifth. The Thorobreds manufactured a run in the top half of the fifth, but that was it, as the game was called due to inclement cold weather.Â
Wortham, Logsdon, and
Logan Fink each had two hits in the game to lead the offensive. Wortham,
Cody Mish, Fink, Logsdon, Furr, and Cruz each scored two runs in the game and
Anthony Calabro, Mish, Logsdon, and Cruz each had multiple RBI in the contest.Â
West Georgia will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at Cole Field in a single game to end the three-game series. Â
